Utsukushii Kare (2021) Review

Based on a BL novel by Yu Nagira, “Utsukushii Kare” depicts a romantic relationship between Hira Kazunari (Hagiwara Toshihisa) and Kiyoi Sou (Yagi Yusei). Hira Kazunari is a high school senior who suffers from a stuttering disorder that prevents him from communicating well, has been unable to fit in with his surroundings, and has had no friends since he was a child. Using the camera his parents bought him, he takes pictures of his ordinary life and feels half resigned to his life. While Kiyoi Sou is an overwhelmingly charismatic boy who reigns at the top of the school caste. He has an attractive beauty, attracting the opposite person and Hira is no exception.

Then came the last class change in high school. Hira is even more nervous than usual and is unable to say his name when he introduces himself, but when Kiyoi Sou, a new student in the same class enters at the perfect time, the atmosphere in the class changes completely. By chance, he is saved by Sou. In the spring of his third year of high school, Hira stutters during his class self-introduction and is treated like a patsy by Sou and the rest of the class. However, Hira falls in love with the cool and beautiful of Sou from the moment he takes a glance at him.

Sou, who is the center of the class, has been pursuing a dream in secret, but Hira notices, and a “secret between the two of them” is born. Hira is happy about it, but he doesn’t know what he is feeling anymore. A pure and straightforward “first love” is about to begin. However, when Hira accidentally finds out about it, their relationship takes a sudden turn when something happens that changes the power relationship within the class.

Hagiwara Riku said “This time, I will be playing the role of Hira. When I received the offer and read the script, I was attracted to Hira’s straightforwardness and innocence that involved everyone around him. Hira doesn’t show much emotion in front of others, but in the monologue, he speaks many words without any lies, so I think that’s one of the highlights. When he meets Sou, Hira’s daily life changes drastically, and I would like to play each of his emotions carefully.”

Yusei Yagi confided “I will be playing the role of Kanade Sou. I’m working on this drama with the support of director Sakai, my co-stars, and the staff. There are many aspects of Sou’s background that overlap with my own, and I feel something similar to the feelings I experienced as a student, of not wanting to spend time alone. I worked hard to create the role with an awareness of what it would be like if Sou existed in this world. I’ll do my best to express Kiyoi Sou in a way that fans of the original story will also enjoy!”
