The Last Goodbye to Mama (2021) Review

This is an urban drama about a mother-son relationship between Ding Biyun and Ding Xiaojun. Ding Xiaojun, who grew up with his mother, Ding Biyun, in a small town in northern Jiangsu Province, goes to university in Beijing at the age of 18 and spends a life of degradation. Ding Xiaojun avoids his mother until something happens to his hairdresser Fat Hu and he meets his girlfriend Yu Ya. With his mother’s encouragement, Ding Xiaojun regains his strength and graduates. He arranges for Yu Ya and his mother to meet in Shanghai to bring his faltering youth to a close. But on this day, the two most important women are leaving him. His mother, Ding Biyun, is diagnosed with a metastatic tumor in her bones, and they begin a difficult but heart-warming battle against cancer.

When it comes to a mother’s love, many of us will instantly burst into tears as heart-warming moments keep coming back to us. The strongback that has been with us for most of our lives, with a strength that is extremely unconventional, holds us up, and builds a world of warmth and tolerance.

The drama brings audiences today to take the clichéd yet always the tear-jerking theme of maternal love and injects a wave of warmth into your heart in the cool of early autumn. “The Last Goodbye to Mama” has been scheduled and will be available on October 13 on Tencent Video and Youku.

“The Last Goodbye to Mama” stars Dong Jie and Yin Fang in the lead roles. The drama follows Ding Biyun and Ding Xiaojun, an ordinary mother and son in a small town in northern Jiangsu Province. The narrative structure of the drama breaks away from traditional tropes, with two parallel lines outlining the half-life trajectory of the two of them, presenting a complete snapshot of their lives, to give a panoramic view of Chinese families.

After watching the trailer of “The Last Goodbye to Mama” there are already having a collective “woo-hoo”. There are so many heartfelt memories that are reproduced in one frame, those who are far away can only cry under the blanket, while those who are close to their mothers can be pampered and made cute, which definitely enhances their relationship! The trailer alone is a tear-jerker, and the rest of the film is sure to be worth watching!

All in all,  “The Last Goodbye to Mama” goes online, be sure to have tissues and warm embraces ready, so don’t be afraid to cry your way to a red nose.
