The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021) Review

Originally scheduled to start shooting in late 2019, filming of “The Battle at Lake Changjin” was forced to be delayed by the sudden outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic. During the epidemic, the creative team continued to polish the script and adjust the shooting schedule. The three directors, Chen Kaige, Tsui Hark, and Dante Lam, worked well together, and the actors, including Wu Jing, Jackson Yee, Hu Jun, Jerry Li, Elvis Han, Zhu Ya Wen, Duan Yi Hong portrayed their roles with a sense of reverence and made every scene a good one.

The film is set against the backdrop of the Battle of Changjin Lake, the second battle of the war against the US, and in order to recreate the entire process of the battle in a panoramic manner, the creative team has gone through more than five years of script polishing, more than two years of meticulous preparation, more than 70,000 people participating in the mass cast, super large-scale preparation of costumes, props, and military equipment, and more than 100 kilometers of battle tactics design. 2021, the film “The Battle at Lake Changjin” will serve as the film will be officially released nationwide in 2021 as a tribute masterpiece for the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China.

“The Battle at Lake Changjin” tells the story of a dramatic history: 71 years ago, the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army went to fight in North Korea, in the extremely cold and harsh environment, the Eastern Front combat troops with steel-like will and brave and fearless fighting spirit, all the way to chase and kill the enemy, to turn the battlefield situation, to fight out the military prestige of the country.

The new poster shows the soldiers being assembled in full force in the country and taking a train to the battlefield in Korea. In the scene, the soldiers of the Seventh Company, led by Wu Jing’s Wu Qianli, stand solemnly in the carriage, looking and acting differently, but the determination in their eyes reveals the cohesiveness of all the men. This standard military salute by Wu Jing shows the unrelenting bravery of our army as the train moves towards the brutal battlefield of Changjin Lake!

In the trailer, the rivalry between Wu Jing and Yi Yang Qian Xi’s brothers, Wu Qianli and Wu Wanli, becomes the focus of the audience’s attention. In the face of his brother, who is going to follow him to become a soldier, the elder brother said, “The boss said that we both fought all the battles we should fight, so you won’t be allowed to fight”, showing his care and love. But then in the trailer, the younger brother, Wu Wanli, follows his brother into battle, making people curious: what exactly happened in this sudden plot twist? Wu Jing has said that his younger brother is quite “unsettling”, and his less-than-standard bomb-throwing stance at the end of the film seems to confirm his brother’s “concern”. How will the story of these two brothers develop?

The trailer presents an epic and panoramic view of the Battle of Lake Changjin: from the landing of the American troops at Inchon and their brazen crossing of the 38th parallel to the border between China and North Korea, to the volunteers crossing the Yalu River to fight abroad and defend the country against the US. This is highly expected, so let’s watch the movie.
