Paik's Spirit (2021) Review


Netflix has confirmed the production of a new original series “Paik’s Spirit”.

Netflix is partnering with Baek Jong-won, a culinary researcher and restaurant entrepreneur. “Paik’s Spirit”, a new project that Netflix will show with Baek Jong-won, is a Netflix original series where Baek Jong-won sits face to face with other people from various fields representing Korea, sips a drink, and talks about alcohol and life.

“Paik’s Spirit” is expected to be the first reality-type series that Netflix introduces Korea’s alcohol, food, and culture in earnest. In addition, it is expected that Baek Jong-won’s wit and charm, which captivated Koreans, is an opportunity to meet viewers around the world through Netflix.

Baek Jong-won, famous for being Korea’s leading culinary researcher and restaurant business owner, is receiving great love from broadcasting through tvN’s ‘Mr. Baek: The Homemade Food Master’ and ‘Street Food Fighter’. Baek Jong-won, who is well versed in food as well as alcohol, shares interesting stories and life experiences in our alcohol with a representative of Korea, conveying warm sympathy to viewers. From green bottled soju and beer at the center of our alcohol culture to traditional liquor, makgeolli rice wine, and craft beer, it is expected to satisfy the five senses of viewers in Korea as well as around the world with content that tells the story of “the most Korean alcohol”.

“Paik’s Spirit” is co-directed by PDs Park Hee-Yeon, Lee Eun-Kyung, Kwak Cheong-a, and Lee Jong-hyuk, who worked with Baek Jong-won in the ‘Mr. Baek: The Homemade Food Master’ and ‘Street Food Fighter’ series. Attention is paid to how the production team, who has drawn favorable reviews for its fresh planning and sensuous content, will portray the story of the people who make and drink Korean alcohol.

The new project “Paik’s Spirit” with Baek Jong-won, which has expanded the scope from cooking to drinking, is expected to meet viewers in more than 190 countries around the world only through Netflix.

In the teaser, we can see the appearance of guests, they are famous singers, actors, rappers, etc. They came to the TV show in a very comfortable style and just simply is relax.

For example, Rapper Jay Park and Loco with Baek Jong-won (Paik) and his friends enjoy samgyeopsal. Four people sharing life stories with bottles of soju.

At a seaside diner in Busan, Paik and actor Han Ji-min get to know each other while enjoying local specialties and somaek, a delicious beer-brewed soju drink.

Traditional Korean liquor is at the heart of the bar serving creative cocktails. After that, Paik chatted with actor Lee Joon-gi at a restaurant specializing in beef.

Paik and TV show producer Nah Yung-suk set out to learn about makgeolli. The itinerary includes a visit to the winery and a taste of homemade delicacies.

At the pub, volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung sips cold draft beer while enjoying fried chicken with Paik.

Paik met actress Kim Hee-ae on a snowy day in Gangneung. The two toured the brewery and enjoyed an American barbecue dinner, also with lots of beer.
