First Gentleman (2021) Review


The release date of the film “First Gentleman”, directed by Hayato Kawai, has been set for 23 September. An additional cast member has been announced.

The movie is adapted from the novel of the same name, which depicts the struggles of a wife who, at the age of 42, becomes the youngest and first female Prime Minister in history, and her ornithologist husband who tries to support her in the nominal world of politics. Kei Tanaka is cast as Soma Hiyori, the first-ever first gentleman, and Miki Nakatani is cast as Soma Rinko, the female prime minister, who is supported by Soma Hiyori and burns with conviction.
Newly announced cast members include Shihori Kanjiya, Asuka Kudo, Airi Matsui, Houka Kinoshita, Seiya Nagata, Manato Sekiguchi, Hitoshi Yoneda, Tomiyuki Kunihiro, Osamu Terada, Ainosuke Kataoka, Kyusaku Shimada, Kimiko Yo and Ittoku Kishibe.

Shihori Kanjiya plays Ayaka Fujinomiya, a single mother who is in charge of public relations; Asuka Kudo plays Torayama Shimazaki, the “handsome secretary to the prime minister”; Airi Matsui plays Rui Ito, a researcher who works at the ornithological research institute where Hiyori works; Houka Kinoshita plays Minoru Tokuda, the head of the ornithological research institute; Yonemoto Takato plays Hisashi Abe, a suspicious freelance writer; Shimada Kyusaku will play the poker-faced Chief Cabinet Secretary Ozu Tomohiro, Ainosuke Kataoka will play Soma Tayori, Kimiko Yo will play Takako Soma, Soma’s mother, and Ittoku Kishibe will play the black-hearted political don Kyuro Hara.

Along with the announcement, a teaser, poster visual, and character visual were released. “In the “preliminary footage”, we see Rinko smiling in a dress, Hiyori being surrounded by reporters, being tied up by security guards, and claiming “I am the husband of the Prime Minister! I am the husband of the Prime Minister!

The movie depicts the struggles of an ornithologist husband who is thrust into the unknown world of politics when his wife becomes Japan’s first female prime minister, and he himself becomes the first-ever “First Gentleman”. One morning, Rinko asks Soma Hiyori, an ornithologist who has been married for 10 years to Rinko, the leader of the minority opposition party, “Would there be any inconvenience if I became Prime Minister? Rinko asks him one morning. After trying to find out what she meant by the question, but being ignored, Soma Hiyori goes on a business trip to observe wild birds and spends ten days on an isolated island with poor reception. During this time, however, the world changes dramatically. Rinko has been elected as the first-ever female Prime Minister. This automatically makes him the first-ever “husband of a prime minister”, and he vows to do everything in his power to support his wife’s dream, but he finds himself caught up in an unexpectedly turbulent day. Soma Hiyori, who is swept up in the daily turmoil as she no longer has time to spend with her beloved wife, and Rinko, who, with the support of her beloved husband, maintains her faith in the future of her country.

The movie has a bit of humor that will help you relax. Besides, the content also carries a lot of political knowledge as well as relationships around the world of “First Gentleman”, humorous, and emotional. This is a movie worth watching.
