12 Months of Kai (2021) Review

Review

A romantic science fiction suspense about love and discord between us humans and humanoids. The story is an antithesis to modern Japanese people who have difficulty accepting new things and are uncomfortable with change.

In June 2025, Kyouka( played by Ayaka Kikuchi), who works as a web director in Tokyo, gets a personal care humanoid (PCH) named Kai to help her repair a traumatic relationship with a man from her past. In July, Kai learns about her owner, Kyouka. In September, Kai learns about the world outside his home. In October, Kai suggests that Kyouka moves to a new home. In November, they find a new place. In December, Kyouka meets another PCH owner, Shin. In February, Kyouka accidentally acquires something that was never meant to be born. In March, April and May, Kyouka and Kai face unexpected changes in the world…

“12 Months of Kai” is a story of antithesis to those who resist change. Humanoids are still seen as “robots” in many ways, both technologically and conceptually.
However, if the time comes when humanoids are not treated by people, but can be recognized as “co-creating partners”, as humans How will we react, reject or accept it? At a time when our lives are in transition, I think this move will be an opportunity for us to update our “consciousness”. This movie is worth watching because through the film we will slow down, have a more open mind about consciousness, emotions, as well as think about the future more deeply.
